Key points about the Antigua and Barbuda Citizenship by Investment programme

Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment programme launched in 2013 for high-net-worth individuals seeking a faster route to second citizenship.

Investment options

Antigua and Barbuda citizenship applicants choose from 4 optionsSource: Antigua and Barbuda — Official Citizenship by Investment Unit:

  • $230,000+ as a contribution to the National Development Fund;
  • $260,000+ as a donation to a higher education institution, only for families of 6 or more people;
  • $300,000+ as a purchase of real estate;
  • $400,000+ as an investment in a business.

Applicants also pay a processing fee of $10,000 for a single applicant, $20,000 for a family of up to four, and $10,000 for each additional dependant from the 5th family member onwards.

For the higher education contribution option, the processing fee is already included. Families with 7 or more members pay an additional $10,000 for each dependant from the 7th onwards.

Timeframe

Obtaining Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment takes at least 6 months, including document preparation, Due Diligence, application review, approval, and passport issuance.

By comparison, standard naturalisation in many countries requires around 5 years of continuous residence before a person can apply for citizenship.

Required documents

The list of the required documents includes the following:

  1. National passport.
  2. Birth certificate.
  3. Personal reference.
  4. Marriage certificate, if applicable.
  5. Divorce certificate, if applicable.
  6. Affidavit of support for each dependent, if applicable.
  7. Basic application form.
  8. Medical certificate form.
  9. Investment confirmation form.
  10. Photograph and signature certificate form.
  11. Police certificate of no criminal record.
  12. Tax returns and income statements.

Additional documents depend on the investment option. For example, if an investor chooses a property purchase, they provide a purchase agreement.

15 benefits of Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment

Antigua and Barbuda citizenship combines greater mobility, family security, and financial flexibility with relatively light ongoing obligations, making it a practical second-citizenship option for investors.

1. Visa-free entry to 169 countries

With an Antigua and Barbuda passport, investors can spend 90 days out of 180 in the Schengen countries and 180 consecutive days in the UK.

Travelling visa-free to Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Korea is also possible. It simplifies business travel for those who work with partners in Asia.

2. Living in an English-speaking environment

English is the official language of Antigua and Barbuda, making everyday life easier for international families. Citizens can use English when dealing with government authorities, banks, schools, and businesses, without having to learn another language to settle in the country.

3. Conducting international business

With the passport of Antigua and Barbuda, investors can open accounts in European banks, thereby solving the issue of currency control. In this way, settlements between counterparties require fewer costs and time.

4. Real estate income

If investors obtain citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda through purchasing real estate, they will have several advantages. While owning real estate, you can rent it out and make a profit. It is optional to monitor the property's condition; the management company can do this on your behalf.

The yield of properties in Antigua and Barbuda ranges from 2 to 5% per annum.

In 5 years, the property can be sold to return the money.

5. Tax optimisation

To optimise the taxation of their company, investors can transfer the business to Antigua and Barbuda. Business income can be taxed at rates of up to 25%Source: Inland Revenue Department — Unincorporated Business Tax, while the standard Antigua and Barbuda Sales Tax is 17%Source: Ministry of Finance — Antigua and Barbuda’s Statistics Division; exports are zero-ratedSource: Inland Revenue Department — ABST Registration Guide. Private-sector employees contribute 7% of insurable earnings to Social Security, with employers contributing a further 9%Source: Antigua and Barbuda Social Security Board — Employers’ Guide.

Individuals can also reduce their tax burden. For this, they need to become tax residents of Antigua and Barbuda, spending at least 183 days a year in the country. There are no taxes on income, salary, inheritance, capital gains, dividends, interest, and royalties in Antigua and Barbuda.

6. Safe haven abroad

Whatever happens in the country of residence — a crisis, unrest, natural disasters, or an epidemic — with an Antigua and Barbuda passport, an investor will be able to leave the country at any time and fly to the islands.

7. Retaining first citizenship

Antigua and Barbuda permits dual and multiple citizenship, so investors are not required to give up their existing nationality when they become citizens. This makes it possible to gain the benefits of a second passport while retaining the rights attached to the first one, subject to the laws of the investor’s home country.

8. Stable democratic government and the rule of law

Antigua and Barbuda is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. After gaining independence in 1981, Antigua and Barbuda remained under the control of the British monarch. The Governor-General represents the monarch on the island.

The main goal of the Commonwealth is promoting democracy — building, supporting, and strengthening legal systems and good governance in member countries. Since 1980, the Commonwealth has observed over 160 elections in 40 countries.

9. Access to international banking services

With an Antigua and Barbuda passport, opening an account with a European or other international bank may be more accessible: the background check will not be as strict and lengthy, and refusal is less likely. This enables investors to move savings to a reliable bank and complete foreign exchange transactions without the challenges associated with foreign exchange control.

10. Living in Antigua and Barbuda without limits

Citizens can enter, live, work, and study in Antigua and Barbuda without immigration restrictions. This also gives investors and their families a reliable place to relocate if travel rules tighten or borders close to foreign nationals.

11. Extended list of family members to join the application

When it comes to obtaining Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment, the programme stands out for offering some of the broadest eligibility criteria for including family members in a single application.

Family members can obtain citizenship simultaneously as investors. The programme allows providing citizenship to the principal applicant’s spouse, children under 30, parents, grandparents, and siblings.

Citizenship by investment programmes in other countries often do not allow siblings or grandparents to be included, as is the case with St Kitts and Nevis. Dominica and St Lucia are other examples, excluding siblings and grandparents respectively. Antigua and Barbuda also stands out for not requiring children to be financially dependent on the main applicant.

Family reunification is also possible within 10 years of obtaining Antigua and Barbuda citizenship. The programme is especially flexible, allowing applicants to add relatives who were eligible from the outset, as well as a future spouse and children born later.

12. Remote citizenship process

The applicant doesn’t have to visit Antigua and Barbuda to get citizenship — the whole process can be done remotely, including submitting documents and fulfilling the investment conditions.

The only requirement is to visit the country once for at least 30 days within the 5 years after obtaining the passport. This applies to each person who got a passport, including the investor and their family members.

13. No requirement to live permanently in the country

Applicants do not need to live in Antigua and Barbuda before applying or after obtaining citizenship. The only stay requirement is to spend at least 30 days in the country within the first 5 years after becoming a citizen.

14. No language or history exams for new citizens

Investors don’t need to take language or history exams to obtain an Antigua and Barbuda passport, while many other countries — for example, the European ones — require applicants for citizenship to learn national languages and take integration courses.

15. Investment option for big families

Investors willing to provide passports to their big families can take advantage of a unique investment opportunity within the Antigua and Barbuda CBI programme.

An applicant with a family of 6 or more people can make a non-refundable contribution to the higher education institution. The contribution fee is $260,000 for 6 people. For any additional family member, the investor adds $10,000 to the contribution

After obtaining citizenship, one of the family members under 29 can study at the university for free for 1 year.

Disadvantages of holding an Antigua and Barbuda passport

Antigua and Barbuda citizenship offers a range of benefits. However, there are also some disadvantages compared with other citizenship by investment programmes.

No automatic inheritance. Children born abroad to Antigua and Barbuda CBI investors do not automatically acquire citizenship unless one of their parents was born in Antigua and Barbuda. However, they can obtain citizenship later through a separate application.

Children born in Antigua and Barbuda acquire citizenship at birth and can pass it to their own children born abroad.

Minimum stay requirement. In contrast to other Caribbean CBI countries, Antigua and Barbuda requires its new citizens to visit the country for at least 30 days during the first 5 years after obtaining citizenship. The 30-day period does not have to be completed in a single stay and can be spread across several visits.

Limited double tax treaty coverage. Alongside the CARICOM Double Taxation Agreement, Antigua and Barbuda has a bilateral double taxation agreement only with the UKSource: GOV.UKAntigua and Barbuda tax treaties. If an investor remains a tax resident elsewhere and earns income in Antigua and Barbuda, such as rental income, it may also need to be declared in the country of tax residence.

Limited access to the United States. Antigua and Barbuda citizens face significant restrictions on travel to the US. Since January 1st, 2026, the US has suspended entry for nationals of Antigua and Barbuda on B-1/B-2 visitor visas, subject to limited exceptionsSource: The White House — Presidential Proclamation dated December 16th, 2025

Where a B-1/B-2 visa can still be issued under an exception, it is limited to one entry and 3 months of validity rather than the previous 10-year multiple-entry terms. In addition, Antigua and Barbuda is included in the US Visa Bond Programme: eligible B-1/B-2 applicants may be required to post a refundable bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000, with the amount determined during the visa interview.

Antigua and Barbuda also has no E-2 treaty with the US, unlike Grenada, whose citizens can apply for an E-2 Investor Visa and use it to live in the US while developing and managing a business.

Comparison of advantages and disadvantages of the Antigua and Barbuda investment programme

Antigua and Barbuda’s CBI programme is available to adult investors with no criminal records and grave illnesses. Besides, it’s one of the quickest and most accessible paths to a second passport.

However, it’s essential to consider all the pros and cons before investing $230,000 in the Caribbean country’s economy.

Process of obtaining an Antigua and Barbuda citizenship

Based on Immigrant Invest’s experience, the process of obtaining Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment takes at least 6 months.

Applicants work through a licensed programme agent, pass preliminary and government Due Diligence, complete the chosen investment, and then receive their citizenship documents and passport.

1

1 day

Contacting a licensed agent

By law, investor documents must be prepared by a licensed programme agent. Submitting the documents yourself is impossible.

Immigrant Invest is a licensed agent for the Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment programme that can act on the applicant’s behalf during the whole process.

2

1 day

Preliminary Due Diligence

This procedure helps find the risk of rejection before the investor spends time and money preparing documents and applying. If we find any red flags, we can offer another programme.

Thanks to the preliminary Due Diligence, the risk of citizenship denial is reduced to 1%.

3

3—5 weeks

Collection of documents and applications

The list of documents for participation in the programme depends on the individual circumstances. Lawyers of Immigrant Invest analyse the investor’s background and say what documents will be needed.

4

6+ months

Due Diligence

The CBI Unit conducts security checks on the investor and all family members over 12. It reviews their documents and cross-checks applicants against international databases before deciding whether to approve the application.

Applicants over 16 must also attend a mandatory interview, held online in English.

5

1 month

Fulfilment of the investment condition

When the application is approved, the investor makes a contribution, buys real estate, or invests in a business. It must be done within 30 days.

6

4 weeks

Obtaining a passport and taking an oath

After approval, the naturalisation certificate and passport are issued within around 4 weeks and sent to the investor’s specified address.

The investor must also take the oath of allegiance, either in Antigua and Barbuda or at an Antigua and Barbuda embassy or consulate abroad.

Within the first 5 years after obtaining citizenship, programme participants must spend at least 30 days in Antigua and Barbuda.

  • How powerful is the Antigua and Barbuda passport?

Antigua and Barbuda has a visa-free regime with 169 countries. Among them are popular destinations for tourism and business trips.

The passport of this country allows one to come to any Schengen country and stay for 90 days within 6 months. Also, citizens of Antigua and Barbuda fly to the UK and stay for 180 days without additional documents.

With an Antigua and Barbuda passport, you can go to Singapore, Hong Kong, and South Korea without additional documents. It simplifies business travel for those who work with partners in Asia.

  • Can I buy citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda?

No, one can’t just buy the Antigua and Barbuda passport. But you can apply for citizenship by investment, pass a Due Diligence check and be granted a second passport in several months.

The Antigua and Barbuda Citizenship Programme allows obtaining a passport of the country by investing in its economy. There are four options offered:

    • $230,000+ — contribution to the National Development Fund;
    • $260,000+ — donation to a higher education institution, only for families of 6 or more people;
    • $300,000+ — purchase of real estate;
    • $400,000+ — investment in a business.
  • Can citizens of Antigua and Barbuda work in the UK?

Yes, but they need the appropriate UK work visa. Antigua and Barbuda citizens can visit the UK for up to 6 months without a visitor visa, but they must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation, ETA, before travelling.

An ETA does not permit regular paid or unpaid work for a UK company.

  • Do Antigua and Barbuda need a visa for the USA?

Yes, but since January 1st, 2026, entry to the US on B-1, B-2 and B-1/B-2 visas has been suspended for most Antigua and Barbuda nationals, subject to limited exceptions and waivers. Where a B-1/B-2 visa can be issued, it is valid for one entry within 3 months. Applicants must also post a refundable visa bond of $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000, with the amount set at the visa interview.

  • Can a citizen of Antigua and Barbuda work in the USA?

Yes, but only with the appropriate US work visa. For Antigua and Barbuda citizens, the current restrictions suspend entry on B-1/B-2, F, M and J visas, while other non-immigrant categories may still be available subject to US immigration rules. For Antigua and Barbuda nationals, many work visa categories are currently issued for one entry with 3 months’ validity.

  • Does Antigua and Barbuda citizenship give you the right to live and work in other Caribbean countries?

As a member of CARICOM, Antigua and Barbuda participates in regional free-movement arrangements, but its citizenship does not automatically give an unrestricted right to live and work in every Caribbean country.

Antigua and Barbuda citizens who fall within eligible CARICOM categories can move to participating member states and work there under the applicable free-movement rules; otherwise, local immigration and work-permit requirements may apply.

  • Can Antigua and Barbuda citizenship help with international business relocation?

Yes, Antigua and Barbuda citizenship can make international business relocation easier by giving investors the right to live and operate in an English-speaking, business-friendly jurisdiction. It can also simplify access to international banking, cross-border transactions, and company structuring.

  • What are the disadvantages of second citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda?

If a foreigner obtains citizenship of Antigua and Barbuda, he might face obligations to pay taxes in two countries at once, since Antigua and Barbuda has a double taxation agreement only with the UK.

However, there is no income tax in Antigua and Barbuda, so if a foreigner makes a profit from renting out property in Antigua and Barbuda, the tax will need to be paid only once in the country of tax residence.

  • How long does it take to get an Antigua and Barbuda passport?

You can obtain Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment within at least 6 months. If you need a second passport faster, you can participate in Vanuatu or St Kitts and Nevis citizenship by investment programmes and get a new status in 2—4 months.

  • Do I need to renounce my citizenship when applying for an Antigua and Barbuda passport?

No, citizens of Antigua and Barbuda are not prohibited from having second citizenship. The first passport must be renounced only if the country of the first citizenship prohibits having several passports.

  • Can I become a tax resident of Antigua and Barbuda?

Yes, you can become a tax resident of Antigua and Barbuda if you spend over 183 days a year in the country. Antigua and Barbuda tax residents do not pay taxes on income, salary, inheritance, capital gains, dividends, interest, and royalties.

  • Is there an expiration date for Antigua and Barbuda citizenship by investment?

Investors receive citizenship in Antigua and Barbuda for life but can not pass it on by inheritance. The passport must be renewed periodically: the first passport is issued to the investor for 5 years, and subsequent ones for 10.

Citizenship can be revoked in the first 5 years after receiving it if you violate the terms of the programme. For example, do not come to the country for 30 days or sell investment property beforehand.
